INTRODUCTION TO THE ELENI CHURCH WORK OF ART
During the preparatory stage, we were inspired both by the location of the Eleni Church
/ Mustafapasa / Cappadocia/ Turkey, and by the theme:
Water!=Bright? Su!=PIRILTI?
The original inhabitants of this area, Cappadocia, were the
Hittites. Shortly after 1900, 12000 Hittite clay tablets
with Mesopotamian writing were found in Boghaz. Part of these
tablets could be deciphered because the writing was Baylonian.
In 1919, the Czech professor Hrozny succeeded in translating
one entire sentence. In addition he proved that the Hittite
language was Indo-European and thus related to our language.
This sentence read:
NOW YOU SHALL EAT BREAD AND YOU SHALL DRINK WATER
We have used this text as a starting point for our contribution to the central theme
of Art/Eco Platform Cappadocia: Water. This sentence, in our view, emphasizes
the importance of water and food, the basic necessities of life, still valid in modern times.
This work of art has been realised through the cooperation of
the visual artists Rineke Kop (paintings) and Clemens Zalm (photography).
The paintings were made with acrylic paint and the element water.
